Summary of Minutes

As a CU committee we’re trying to be available, approachable and transparent. On the following page you will find a short summary of the minutes taken at committee meetings. This is being made available so everyone can see what’s being discussed, and so that if you have any good ideas, comments or suggestions then you can contribute them. So if you have any comments or if you have anything you’d like to be put on the agenda for a committee meeting then please get in touch with Jonny or Esme. The full minutes taken at a committee meeting are also available if you speak to either Jonny or Esme.

06/05/09

  1. This Friday - Unite:
It is Unite this Friday so CU is at 7.30pm, St. Augustines. Be there. Starbucks on Princes St. is going to be open after Unite with people from all the Edinburgh universities going. Kris will be pointing people in the right direction from the Chaplaincy.
  2. Next Friday:
Next Friday night we plan to invite all the fourth years, and those going away for the next year abroad, to come along. We will spend time praying with them all. It has also been suggested we might get some people to talk about their experience of their four years here at Edinburgh.
  3. Prayer Walk:
Possibly next Saturday afternoon, Jack hoping to arrange it around the Pollock area.
  4. CU database:
    Kirsty shared an idea
to get everyone on a database with information about what they want to do in CU, name, what they want to be involved with, mobile number, etc.

29/04/09

  1. Masquerade Ball:
Final details are that it is in St Peter's Church hall, Saturday 9th May 8.00-11.30pm, £5 entry
  2. Freshers Week Sign Up:
Happening at CU on Friday 1st of May, or on the website at any point following that Friday. This year we are also seeking to encourage freshers to really get involved with their university and not just CU so that point will be stressed by the freshers week team and committee members throughout the next few weeks.
  3. Compassion:
Carrie and Juliette both highlighted just how short we are falling from the required compassion payments for this year. A collection will be taken on Friday the 4th May however this is still not expected to meet the requirements for the size of shortfall this year. Basically to start next year with a shortfall is an untenable option so we need to consider some way to pay the required amount.

Committee Retreat
Coming as soon as exam stress is a little less!

25/03/09

  1. CU Ball
There will once again be a CU ball. The date, location and time of this even are all still to be confirmed however we are proposing having an evening of fun discoing, ceilidhing and chatting. More details will follow next semester.
  2. Freshers Week
The committee is going to meet up to discuss freshers week with the freshers week team soon. We have proposed a launch/sign up night for the 1st of May.
  3. Exam Ministry
Everything is falling into place here. If you are not in small groups then please do get involved with the evening for non-small group people! A budget and a fairly final plan were both discussed and approved.
  4. Other Business
The committee spent time discussing plans for how to try and make compassion work better this year. Ideas of how to make the scheme place less pressure on small groups and how to create a more meaningful and personal relationship with the compassion kids were discussed.

18/03/09

  1. Committee Discussion
Everyone on committee has spent the last 2 weeks praying and really seeking for God to guide us and help us throughout the next year. We took some time in committee to discuss what the purpose of CU is and what we feel about the idea of CU as a mission team. Also we looked at what the roles of each of the people on committee is and what the role of the committee as a whole is. If you have any thoughts on these areas then please let us know what you think, it would be great to hear from you.

  2. Friday meeting
This week Tara Devlin is speaking to us about materialism and fair trade. Plans for next week are to have the CU meeting starting at 7pm and spending 1 hour praying with worship lead on the guitar. Then after that lots of time for everyone to go and spend time with friends on this last day of the semester.

  3. Other Business
Discussion about plans for another CU ball are on the agenda for next week.
Anything that you think we should be discussing, just let Dave or Jules know and we will see what we can do.

11/03/09

  1. Freshers Week
Phil Harshaw gave committee an overview of the work that the freshers week team have done so far. We are currently lined up to see some of the old favourites back again alongside some new ideas thrown into the mix. Committee thought that the ideas that were proposed sounded really good and are pleased with how the freshers week team are getting on. One key point that came out of discussion was that it would be really good to encourage freshers to get involved with other societies and activities aside from just CU, ideas about how to do this have still not been decided on. Watch this space for further details about freshers week.
  2. Constitutional Amendment
Just a quick update to say that the amendment was voted down. If anyone would like more details as to the proceedings then please get in touch with Dave or Juliette.
  3. Website
Things have already begun to change on the website. Currently committee is being encouraged to update the pages that are specific to their roles. If anyone has ideas or suggestions for the website or content they would like to see then don't hesitate to get in touch with one of us, all input will be useful.
  4. Exam Ministry
Exam ministry will be organised by Carrie this year. The current plan is to run it for one week during the beginning of the exam period. Everyone who has time to get involved is encouraged to do so, particularly this year we are planning to have a day when it is left entirely up to non-small group people!

04/03/09

  1. Societies' Executive
EUSA have been offered us the CU to have someone on the Societies Executive. This is an important opportunity to have Christians involved within EUSA. It would be great to find someone who would be enthusiastic to be involved with this.
  2. EUCU website
We are working on ways to use the website more effectively. Also there is a need to update current content so that is going to take place over the next few weeks.

  3. CU in the next year and beyond
The committee under took a lengthy but very productive discussion looking at how we can move forward with the CU in the next year. This discussion has prompted committee to spend the next week or two praying and discerning God's will for the CU in the future. Please pray for committee as we try to plan ahead for the future!

  4. Constitutional Amendment
There was a short discussion making clear to the new committee the outline for what the constitutional amendment is about. Also agreement that we should encourage those in the CU to turn out on Friday to vote on the amendment as it is important to get a good representation of feeling among CU members.
Note: The amendment was voted down on Friday 6th March
