Announcements

Below are a few announcements of things that are happening in the near future:

Eagles Rising: South Africa

Looking for an opportunity to make a difference this year? Always wanted to go to South Africa? Then let me tell you about an exciting new mission: Eagles Rising is a Christian project based on a farm near Cape Town, that has been set up to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds by getting alongside them and teaching them invaluable life skills. They are looking for volunteers to come for a minimum of 10 days to help them with this fantastic venture.  Activities for volunteers will include:  helping at a day care centre for underprivileged children, renovating buildings and shacks, helping with tunnel farming and outreach to children in squatter areas.  For further information see the brochure at www.eaglesrising.org.za, also watch the slideshow on YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeAkx1VkHaQ

Ruth Turner, a former EU student, is going out in November this year and really can't wait. It's such a great chance to help our brothers and sisters in Christ in South Africa.  Please consider this opportunity in your prayers and come and help if you can.

Edinburgh urban Summer Team 2010

The Urban Team will give you a unique opportunity to explore what it means to live and speak for Jesus in an urban context. We will be living and serving alongside a church in a fairly deprived part of south east Edinburgh (Niddrie).

You will get the chance to see what the church is doing to serve those around them, and how the gospel is impacting lives. And we will encourage and help the church in their ongoing efforts to reach their community with the life transforming news about Jesus Christ.

It promises to be a humbling, challenging, intriguing, exciting, stimulating journey of a fortnight!

Leader: Jill Barker

Contact: jbarker@uccf.org.uk

Dates: 27th June-11th July

Cost: £100 approx

Edinburgh International Outreach

Edinburgh International Outreach is a very significant opportunity to meet international students, help them find community away from home and give them the opportunity to hear the gospel. Every year we have students from all over the world come to the cafe and hear the gospel. Brilliant training in the mornings and at £65 for two weeks (food and accommodation) cheaper than living. More info and application form at www.friendsinternational.org.uk/eio or chat to Jonny TP, Matt Tindale, Hazel Cochrane or Jonny Towler.

Summer Mission Team In Pilton

This summer from Saturday the 31st of July to Sunday the 8th of August the Old Kirk Church of Scotland is running a Mission in West Pilton in the North of Edinburgh. If you are interested in volunteering in the mission, in praying for us or in the local area, read on.

West Pilton and the surrounding areas are in the top 5% of the worst areas in the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, signifying high levels of crime, poor health, unemployment, broken families and other issues of social concern.

In response to the dire spiritual and physical needs of the people and of the area, the Old Kirk intends to hold a 9-day mission in the parish. Our aim is to evangelise to the local community through the parish church in acts of social gathering and charitable aid (particularly with the intent of helping local young parents.)

How will we do this?
We are planning a 6-day holiday club event in the mornings for primary school kids (with a Pirate theme so keep your eye patches handy!) This will be accompanied by an open café for parents and a crèche for the young.
We intend to go around the community offering to wash cars, clean people‘s kitchens, and (potentially) to clear rubbish off of the streets.
We intend to host a huge “Beach Activities” day, featuring competitions, games and ice cream.
We intend to host a free barbeque in the grounds of the Old Kirk.
We are holding a movie night in the church.
These are our plans to date though they may be subject to change and revision.

Who are we looking for and what will I get up too?
We are looking for Christians who think they could help in the above tasks and engage with God spiritually through prayer and through outreach. As well as helping to run events and interacting with Christian and non-Christian service-users, volunteers will engage in group Bible study, time for worship and in helping to organise two Sunday church services.  The team will stay in the manse of the church and eat together. There is an optional 6:30AM daily dip in the Firth of Forth (!!!) The mission is free to all volunteers. However we are also looking for volunteers to help cook evening meals, to help plan events, to advertise events and to pray and fast for us. You may want to volunteer only to help at the Holiday Club or at the Beach Activities Day, if so, that would be super. The mission is run under the auspices of the Church of Scotland but membership or attendance of a Church of Scotland is not required. It will be necessary for volunteers working with the young to be disclosed via Disclosure Scotland. If you are interested in any of the above, or if you have any queries please get in contact by emailing don_pritchard@hotmail.co.uk Additionally, if you know of any sources of grants or free money for missionary activity we‘d love to hear from you.
